How AT&T Internet Air keeps me connected at home—and a Dedicated Hotspot keeps me connected on the road
Reliable and fast internet service isn’t just nice to have. Whether you’re working from home, streaming from a campsite, or video calling the kids or grandkids from somewhere beautiful and remote, staying connected is essential. For many RVers, that means solving two distinct issues: the home base and the open road. I found the answer to both—and it all comes down to two products working together.

My home is in an area where fiber internet isn’t currently available. Honestly, it’s not coming anytime soon. If you live in a similar type of location, you know the frustration of cobbling together a solution from whatever’s left over when your neighborhood—or even just your street—is skipped.
Enter AT&T Internet Air. This fixed wireless home internet solution taps into AT&T’s 5G and LTE cellular network and turns it into strong, stable Wi-Fi in your home. It’s built specifically for places where fiber doesn’t reach. You plug in a sleek little tower (very sci-fi chic), and it just works.
When I first started the service, I’ll be honest, I wasn’t expecting all that much. I’ve been searching for a solution for a bit, and I’ve been burned by so-called innovative internet solutions more than once. So, I was genuinely surprised by the signal quality. I was able to stream, work, and video call without the buffering and dropped connections I’d resigned myself to.
Here’s what AT&T Internet Air offers:

- Price: $60/month flat—no overages, no hidden fees

One important note: Internet Air is a fixed product. It’s designed to stay at your home address. So, when the rig rolls out of the driveway, you need a different solution—and that’s where the second half of this setup comes in.

The Open Road: AT&T’s Prepaid Data Plan with a Dedicated Hotspot
I’ve always believed in chasing sunsets and deadlines with equal passion. So, last fall, I packed up my rig, tuned up the tires, and headed out to do the great Pacific Coast Highway crawl—from the misty redwood giants of Northern California all the way down to the sunbaked cliffs (though shockingly cold water) of San Diego. The road curled, the waves crashed, and the cell service… well, let’s just say it had some feelings.
There were areas near charming little towns where café Wi-Fi kept things humming. But we know the magic of RVing happens between the dots. In those glorious stretches is where I realized how critical my internet setup really was. A random Zoom call can’t crash because I’m deep in a canyon. Sending files, editing photos, hopping on Slack—it all has to just work.
I tested mobile hotspots, campground Wi-Fi, and satellite boosters. The real game-changer? AT&T’s Prepaid Data Plan with a Dedicated Hotspot Device.
If you’re thinking, “Isn’t that just a typical hotspot?” Yes, but it’s more. A dedicated hotspot device connects exclusively to AT&T’s nationwide 5G network, giving you a stable, reliable connection that isn’t competing with your phone’s data plan or throttled after a few gigabytes of video calls.
When your “address” changes every few days, that kind of reliability really matters.
I Looked Up the Stats (So You Don’t Have To)
Let’s talk numbers, because I know at least some of you are stat geeks like me. Here’s what AT&T says you get:
- Typical Speeds: 100 – 300 Mbps when on AT&T’s C-Band/5G+ network (typically in cities); 25 – 80 Mbps in more remote areas on LTE (think in national forests, rural areas, or away from major interstates)
- Price: Currently $55/month for 50GB; $90/month for 100GB (plus taxes and fees)
- Equipment: A dedicated hotspot device runs anywhere from $150 to $400*
- Contract: Nope, no long-term strings attached, no credit check. The prepaid data makes it easy to get started and, importantly, just as easy to cancel.
*Note: You may find less expensive equipment. Unfortunately, much of it is made for 4G-only hotspots, which is typically not enough for serious RVers like us. You may, however, find better deals by bundling the device and service directly through AT&T.
I clocked over 200 Mbps while camped in the hills above Santa Barbara. Was it perfect everywhere? No. But in most locations, it handled my work, my streaming of the Vikings game or FC Barcelona matches, and even a little online gaming from my kids just fine. Even if we were all using it at the same time. (AT&T’s hotspot devices can support several devices at once.)
This may have brought data caps to mind. And yes, your data is capped at 50GB or 100GB, depending on the plan selected. Once you hit that limit, speeds drop significantly for the rest of the billing cycle, making the connection essentially unusable for anything beyond basic texting. There is good news, though: 100GB goes further than you’d think.
A two-hour HD movie streams at roughly 3 – 4GB, and a video call burns about 1GB per hour. That means on the 100GB plan, you could realistically stream a movie every night, hop on a few hours of video calls each week, browse social media, and stay on top of email—and still finish the month with data to spare. (I did.)
It can get tight if you’re on back-to-back Zoom meetings all day or downloading large files regularly. In other words, full-time remote workers with heavy daily usage may find 100GB too much of a stretch.
But for the traveler like me who wants to stay connected with family, catch up on work in the evenings, and unwind with a show from time to time, you’re comfortably covered.
Another thing worth knowing upfront: AT&T’s plans default to standard definition video streaming, which caps video quality at around 2 Mbps. If you want to watch in HD, you’ll need to log into your account and turn off the Video Management feature—it’s a simple one-time setting, but it’s easy to miss. With that turned off, you’re watching in full quality.

How the Dedicated Hotspot Compares to Other RV Options
Okay, now let’s talk options—because there are a few. Here’s how they stacked up for me:
- Campground Wi-Fi—Great if it works, but honestly, that’s a rare unicorn. Most parks offer shared networks that groan when five RVs try to stream Netflix at once.
- Phone as a Hotspot—Most phones can do it, but if you’re burning through your phone plan’s data fast, and speeds get throttled. Fine for emails; not great for remote work or video calls.
- Satellite (Starlink)—Incredible in truly remote spots, but bulky, power-hungry, and comes with a steep upfront cost. It also doesn’t play well with trees—a real deal-breaker in redwood country. Worth considering for open desert or beach camping.
- AT&T Dedicated Hotspot—The sweet spot for RVers who stay in one place for only a few days or weeks at a time. Fast, stable, simple, with no annual contract. Best bang for my buck on this trip.
I’m not saying one is better than the others overall—they each have their place. But for the kind of travel I do—slow rolling from town to town, working as I go—the dedicated hotspot earned its permanent spot in my connectivity arsenal.
The Full Setup: Better Together
Internet Air handles my home base with fast, reliable Wi-Fi at a flat monthly rate. But once I hit the road, the AT&T Dedicated Hotspot takes over. Sure, campground Wi-Fi still gets used occasionally for late-night updates or big downloads, but it’s the backup, not the plan.
Two products, one ecosystem, zero coverage gaps. That’s the setup that finally made this digital nomad feel truly at home.
