Tucked into southeast Minnesota, within the rolling bluff country, Hidden Bluffs Resorts has earned its reputation as one of the Midwest’s most beloved campgrounds—and it’s easy to see why. Consistently earning a 9.5 out of 10 rating—one of the highest scores of any campground in the region—as well as devoted RVers who come back year after year.
It’s not the refreshing outdoor pool or packed activity schedules that keep people coming back (though that doesn’t hurt), it’s the spacious wooded sites, clean and well-maintained facilities, and staff that genuinely seem happy to see you. Don’t forget the spectacular natural setting. So beautiful and so unlike any other campground.
Anyone looking for a place to slow down, unplug, and forget about the world for just a little while can get lost in the bluffs, trails, creeks, and birdsongs. Yet there are still plenty of activities to keep a busy family entertained, as well as ways to meet up with or make new friends along the way.
In short, Hidden Bluffs has a way of making you feel like it’s exactly what you’re looking for.
What Makes Hidden Bluffs Stand Out?
If we’re honest, few campgrounds earn a near-perfect score. And Hidden Bluffs didn’t get there by accident. If you look through the campground reviews (on TripAdvisor, Facebook, and RVLife), you’ll find a few common threads that pop up again and again.
The grounds? Immaculate.
Staff? They treat even first-time visitors like regulars.
And the setting? Well, that does most of the heavy lifting.
The resort itself sits in a quiet valley at the base of the two bluffs in Minnesota’s southeast corner—a part of the stay that, in our honest opinion, doesn’t get nearly as much attention as it deserves. (Though that might be a good thing.)
In Minnesota’s Bluff Country, the landscape looks more like Wisconsin’s Driftless Region than the flat prairie many people picture when they think of Minnesota. Here, you can explore creek valleys, hardwood forests, and ridgelines with views that stretch for miles.
Hidden Bluffs is right in the center.
And there’s a certain feeling of the place. One camper described the grounds as something right out of a movie set. Another said it’s the “gold standard that all campgrounds should aspire to.” Pretty high praise indeed.
Long-time members talk about returning season after season for years, if not decades, and still finding it worth the trip. For a membership campground, that kind of loyalty speaks volumes.
It doesn’t hurt that bugs—often the great equalizer of an otherwise perfect outdoor experience—are notably absent in the area. Many reviews mention this little bonus unprompted. The reason remains a mystery. Maybe it’s due to the valley’s microclimate? The trout stream keeping the ecosystem in balance? Just good fortune? No matter. We’ll take it!
Setting Up Camp: The Sites
Hidden Bluffs is divided into upper and lower campgrounds woven into the natural terrain. The sites are spacious, well-separated, and fairly private. So, you’ll actually feel like you’re out in the woods rather than parked in a row with neighbors so close you could almost reach out and touch their rig.
Gravel roads connect the property for an unhurried, settled-in layout that helps you naturally slow your roll for a longer stay.
The practical details are on point, too. The resort offers full-hookup sites with 50-amp service, water, and sewer. A combination that’s especially appreciated if you’re staying more than a couple of nights. In addition, sites accommodate big rigs (up to 40 feet), and pull-through options are available for those who’d rather not have to back in.
That said, only about 1/3 of the sites provide full hookups. The rest are water and electric only. If you call ahead, the staff is known for being accommodating and genuinely helpful in steering you toward a site that fits your rig and preference.
Wi-Fi is available near the main lodge and game room if you need to check your emails or the weather. There is, however, no cell service at Hidden Bluffs. While that’s a dealbreaker for some RVers, it’s often one of the things campers like most. A few days to genuinely unplug, without the temptation to get sucked into a small screen. A good book, a roaring fire, and a stream nearby has a way of resetting the body and mind. Ahhh…
What to Do…
Hidden Bluffs strikes a surprising balance that can be harder to pull off than you may think. There’s enough to do, so you won’t feel restless. But the pace is relaxed enough, so you never feel overly scheduled. Guests tend to find a comfortable rhythm fairly quickly.
The soft sounds of water in the background—thanks to the trout stream winding through the property—invite you to drop in a line as you’re finishing your first cup of coffee. Many days, all you need is a Minnesota fishing license and a little patience to catch brook trout. Not much of an angler? Enjoy strolling by the water and soaking in the peace.
Nearby hiking trails are another surprising highlight. The bluffs aren’t just there to observe from below. You can actually get into them. The main trail climbs to a ridge that offers panoramic views of the valley below in a couple of hours with a good pair of shoes. You’ll feel like you earned your evening by the fire (and perhaps a nice bevy) without pushing it too hard.
If you prefer more structured activities, you’ll find solid amenities, including:
- Swimming pool
- Hot tub
- Playground
- Mini golf
- Horseshoes
- Volleyball
- And even a basketball quart.
All are open to visitors.
Weekends add another layer of activities for both kids and adults. So, if you’re interested in being a bit more social, you can join in. And if not, there’s plenty to keep you occupied if you prefer to wander on your own. For example, the lodge is a beautiful log cabin built in 1905 with comfortable common areas for reading and relaxing on a rainy afternoon if you get a little cabin fever in your own rig.
If you do decide you want to venture beyond the resort, the surrounding area offers more than its quiet reputation may suggest. Spring Grove is home to Rockfilter Bourbon Distillery and Fat Pats Brewery—both are worth a visit if you want to enjoy a locally-made drink after a day on the trails or tossing in your line.
Another option is the Spring Grove Cinema, a charming small-town theater that makes for an easy, enjoyable evening out.
If you’re open for a short drive, Forestville/Mystery Cave State Park near Preston offers underground cave tours that pair nicely with the landscape above ground.
Finally, the town of Lanesboro is a natural stop for a half or full day away from camp. The Root River Bike Trails draw cyclists from across the Midwest, and the Bluffscapes Amish Tours provide a glimpse into the working farms and countryside that make this part of the world so unique.
Small Details that Lead to Big Comfort
What separates a good campground from a great one usually comes down to the little things. Cleanliness, for example, comes up in almost every review. The bathhouses are air-conditioned, which can feel like a genuine luxury on a hot summer afternoon. And the laundry facilities are well-maintained.
The camp store is stocked well enough to cover almost anything you could have forgotten at home. Since the nearest town is a good half hour away, it’s nice to have a thoughtfully supplied store that understands what campers really need.
It may not be the flashiest, but the well-stocked store, clean facilities, and attentive staff really make this resort special.
Getting There
Hidden Bluffs Resort is located at 22885 County Road 19 in Spring Grove, Minnesota, which is tucked serenely into the southeastern corner of the state near the Iowa border. The closer you get, the more the landscape shifts, helping you realize the quiet rewards are closing in.
If you’re coming from the Twin Cities, the trip will take about 3 hours. From the west or south, Hidden Bluffs is easily accessible off Highway 14. Head north on County Road 4 and then west on County Road 19. It’s worth mentioning that the last few miles are on gravel. Nothing that will give a well-equipped RV any issues, but it’s good to know in advance.
Cell service and GPS don’t always cooperate out here. So, it’s a good idea to pull the directions from the resort’s website before you leave.
Timing
Weekdays are noticeably quieter than weekends, which can fill up fast—especially in the summer. If your schedule is flexible, a midweek arrival lets you settle in before the weekend crowd shows up. That means you’ll enjoy trails and streams largely by yourself. Spring and early fall are both excellent seasons here. The bluff country foliage in October, in particular, is something that tends to make a return visitor out of a first-timer.
Don’t forget to make your reservation! Calling ahead to discuss site options is typically worth the five minutes. The staff really is helpful about matching your rig and preferences to the right spot. A good site assignment can make a real difference.
